North Canterbury Power Outages: What You Need to Know

Severe weather across North Canterbury has left over 100 MainPower customers in the dark, and for some, the wait for power to be restored is going to be a long one.

The biggest issue is currently on Inland Road and State Highway 1 near Kaikōura. A total of 87 customers lost power at 8:15 am on Tuesday following a bridge washout.

The Current Situation: MainPower has confirmed that while the total number of affected customers isn't massive, the severity of the damage is high. Access is the primary hurdle right now—flooding, unstable ground, and closed roads are preventing crews from getting to the damaged infrastructure.
